Welcome to Funds Flows
Some of you may know me as the Managing Member of Cadet Legal, a corporate attorney, investor, and business consultant who helps clients launch, finance, acquire, and sell businesses.
Something you might not know about me - I have always been a creative. Language in particular is my medium. I’ve been writing songs and stories as far back as I can remember and performing in front of audiences most of my life. I wrote, recorded and performed as a rap artist from childhood through college and into my early twenties. If you’re willing to forgive the audio quality, you can to listen to (and download) the full-length mixtape "Turn the Lights On" that I recorded in college dorms over 15 years ago.
Although I don’t rap anymore - the way my brain works - I can’t help but think in terms of lyrics and lines from literature. Everything that happens reminds me of a song, a book, or a scene from a movie. I majored in Comparative Literature at Princeton, focusing specifically on the interplay between literature and politics. That’s because I think you can only understand literature by understanding the sociopolitical context in which it was created. Reality shapes literature. However, that relationship works both ways - on the micro, personal level, and the macro, societal level, art shapes and creates our reality.
So life events don’t just remind me of music, music adjusts my outlook on life, and propels me through various periods of life.
This includes intense periods professionally -I tend to have a different playlist for each fiscal quarter, and different playlists for various parts of a long transaction process. These songs playing on repeat both capture my feelings (e.g., fatigue, determination, etc.) at a given moment and inspire me to push through those emotions and achieve my goals.
Why Funds Flows?
That’s the backdrop for this miniblog called “Funds Flows.” As a rap lover, few things excite me like an excellently written and delivered verse - a “flow.” During the busiest periods in my professional life, flows regarding hustle, money, and ambition provide the soundtrack for my grind. They also illustrate valuable business principles.
The blog title is also a play on words - a nod to my professional expertise. I am a “funds attorney” - I advise clients on raising capital in private vehicles and using those funds to acquire assets. A “funds flow” is also a document that specifies where and how money is moving in a deal closing. We aim to inspire you to see how and where the money is moving.
Every week, I want to breakdown and appreciate my favorite “funds flows” with you - lyrics and lines related to the grind, ambition, being a boss, and business in general. We’ll go old school, we’ll go new school, we’ll cut across genres, but above all, we’ll talk real life grind.
